Making the numbers speak

Survey results don't speak for themselves. Someone has to make them understandable.

The situation

In late 2021, Capgemini Engineering completed the first cycle of its continuous employee listening programme. HR had prepared the messages for the results, under a title they had already chosen: "You said, we heard, we are acting". The risk with this kind of exercise: publishing scores like a school report, then moving on.

What I did

The original material was designed for specialists. I redesigned the layout from scratch, in English and French, and worked with the communications department on how to present the figures so they would make sense to non-specialists. In summer 2022, for the programme's first anniversary, I built the review around one area that had improved and the local and global initiatives launched in that area.

What it produced

The results report went out to the whole division, signed by the CEO and the HR Director. Its format was reused for the anniversary review, and its visuals were used again the following year to announce the new results.

What I took from it

A figure with no reference point tells the reader nothing.

These cases are summaries. I'm happy to go into more detail, on the method and on the mistakes.
